What you need to know before taking a class

Are you finding it tough to motivate yourself to work out alone? Try grabbing a workout buddy and joining a group fitness class to make the session more enjoyable and to keep you on track to achieve your fitness goals.

Group fitness classes at Lords in Subiaco

At Lords we offer many different group fitness classes, from indoor cycling to aqua fitness sessions, all led by passionate instructors. We have classes that suit a wide range of fitness levels and workout goals.

Our group fitness classes are held in one of three fantastic locations at the centre; our main studio, the dedicated cycle studio or the indoor 25-metre pool, heated to roughly 30 degrees all year.

If you’re used to working out alone, it may be daunting to join a group class for the first time.
Group fitness classes have seen an upward trend over the past few years as more and more people realise the benefits of working out with other people. While working out alone can be a great way to keep your fitness levels up, there are many additional physical and mental health benefits from working out with others.

There’s so much more to it than just catching up in between yoga poses!

Benefits of group fitness

Are you interested in giving group fitness classes a go? We’ve put together a list of the many advantages that come from working out with a group. Whether you’re just starting on your fitness journey or are a seasoned athlete, you’re sure to see the benefits of exercising with others and switching up your usual routine.

1. Increased commitment

Working out with a group can help keep everyone motivated and accountable for staying fit.
Positive peer pressure means that you will be less likely to skip a class and more likely to stay on track for your fitness goals. It’s much harder to press that snooze button and stay in bed when you know you have other people waiting on you to show up!

2. Push yourself harder

The Köhler Effect is an increase in motivation that occurs when working in a group rather than alone. In a group fitness situation, you push yourself harder when working out with people who are more fit than you. This can lead to an increase in time spent exercising or the intensity of the workout. You may even find yourself surprised by how well you can do, spurred on by your fellow teammates.

3. Become more competitive

Everyone has an innate competitive streak that encourages you to keep up with those around you or do better than them. In addition, seeing how others are going can be inspiring and help you realise possibilities outside of what you could normally achieve. We all love a friendly bit of competition, and in a supportive group environment, it can help everyone reach their personal best.

4. Finding proper balance

We get it, life is busy. Between work, home, and personal life, finding the balance you need for a healthy lifestyle can be challenging. Fortunately, the culture of group fitness has made fitness a central part of our social lives. Instead of trying to juggle everything on your plate and inevitably letting something slip, working out with friends can be a great way to combine your social life with your fitness goals.

Why not visit our café for a post-workout coffee and a bite to eat after your workout to continue the conversation? We’re also the only gym in Subiaco with a crèche! This means we can look after your little ones while you take some “me time” to work up a bit of a sweat and focus on your health.

5. Variety in your workouts

Working out with a partner or with a group can give you diversity in workouts you can’t complete alone. Many exercises can also be strengthened or taken further with more than one person.
You can also have more fun with team games and different group activities. You might even find yourself taking on more adventurous classes with a friend than you would on your own.

6. Find support in a team

While all workouts release endorphins, the happy chemicals in your brain that relieve stress and pain are released even more when working out in a group setting. This is due to the supportive vibes that encourage a positive attitude. This mood boost will help you push yourself when you are struggling through a tough workout and will likely last throughout the day.
