See how they run

The Chevron City to Surf for Activ is well known for making fitness fun and inspiring while encouraging all abilities to embrace running and walking as a way to get moving. Paula Hanson, a loyal Lords Recreation Centre member, enthusiastically signed up to Team Lords to enhance her City to Surf journey.

“I first ran the 12-kilometre City to Surf in 1984 and have been running ever since,” she said.

When Paula was younger, the general school of thought was that ‘nice girls’ didn't run more than 200 metres. Her daughter was only two-years-old when she crossed the City to Surf finish line in 64 minutes and thought ‘I can do better!’

Paula, who used to plan holidays around running events all over the world with her friends, says she is a ‘oner’. “One child, one marathon, one ironman, one Rottnest Swim and New York marathon – I want to do one of everything.”

A proud grandmother, Paula was a primary-school teacher and used to be an aerobics instructor at Lords.

“I enjoy the atmosphere at Lords and do strength in the gym on my upper body, as my legs do enough,” she quipped.

The Chevron City to Surf for Activ is Paula’s favourite event in Perth, being the original event and truly for charity.

“I aim to run the City to Surf 12-kilometre stage in under 70 minutes,” says Paula. “Once competitive - always competitive.”

Paula’s hot tips include running with your arms as your legs will follow. If you are training for the 12-kilometre race, run 14-kilometres and hill training is a must.

“Run, rain, hail or shine – run with the kookaburras laughing at you,” she laughed.

Paula does not do 'junk runs', she always runs with a goal and program in mind and likes a few running partners.

“Recovery is important too – stretch and drink lots of water before and after each run and walk to wind down,” Paula explained.

Balance is key and Paula is loving spending quality time with her family and 15 month old grandson. Her GP says she is not a normal 65-year-old! “You should do everything in life, because you only get one opportunity,” she said.
